Thank you to the Northwestern Mutual Foundation for the support of Tourism in Wisconsin!

From the BizTimes……..”The Northwestern Mutual Foundation is donating $500,000 in grants to support nonprofit programs that help make Milwaukee a destination for visitors.
Studies show that events and cultural attractions strengthen a region’s economic growth, acting as magnets for both corporate relocations and prospective workers, the foundation said.
Each grant recipient attracts at least 100,000 attendees annually, contributing to the tourism industry and health of the local economy by creating the kind of memorable experiences, events and thought-provoking exhibits that interest destination seekers.
“One of the reasons Northwestern Mutual has been strong over 155 years is our ability to attract and retain an exceptionally talented workforce,” said John Kordsmeier, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “These programs will further strengthen the region’s reputation, and make Milwaukee even more attractive to visitors, businesses, residents and tomorrow’s workforce.”
One recipient of a Northwestern Mutual grant is the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. The Milwaukee County Zoo hosts 1.3 million visitors annually. The grant will help fund a significant renovation of the main entrance to the Northwestern Mutual Family Farm area.
“The Northwestern Mutual Family Farm is a must-see destination for families visiting the Milwaukee County Zoo,” said Dr. Bert Davis, president and chief executive officer, Zoological Society of Milwaukee. “The new entrance will draw families into the farm by engaging children more quickly in a hands-on history lesson about farming.”
Other recipients of grants from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation include: the Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation’s Stealing for Miracles program; the Friends of Schlitz Audobon’s Preserving a Natural Milwaukee Destination program; the Milwaukee Art Museum’s MAM After Dark program; the Milwaukee Public Museum; and Milwaukee World Festival’s Summerfest Children’s Zone.
The Northwestern Mutual Foundation is the largest corporate foundation in the state of Wisconsin.”

Nostalgia and the movies

Hot summer nights back in the 50’s and 60’s often included an outdoor movie night at your local drive-in movie theatre. For many families it meant the children put on their pj’s and  got to stay up WAY past their bedtime munching popcorn and watching a movie in the outdoors.

Aaaah, nostalgia….but did you know there are still 12 outdoor movie theatres in Wisconsin? From Eau Claire to Fish Creek to Jefferson, you can still take your family to the outdoor movie theatre simply called “the drive-in”. For many of us growing up, this evening out as children was thrilling & exciting. For both friends & family try this “old style” way to see a movie this summer.

Memories more precious than anything you can buy

Jaunt Events owner sells experiences

By Jessica Stephen, Correspondent

May 2, 2012 |

As wallets tightened and jobs evaporated, people turned away from some of the consumerism that drove them in the pre-recession era.

“Most of us have more than we need because we’ve been so consumer-oriented with things. And I think now we’re looking at, ‘Wait a second! What do we really value?’ ” said Patti Klainot, owner of Jaunt Events and Excursions.

For a growing number of people, the value has been found in making memories – even if that means paying someone, like Klainot, to help construct them.

It’s a business Klainot dreamed up as she looked for an alternative to her career as a certified occupational therapy assistant.

“What I came up with is what I had been doing – and not even realizing – and that was special event management,” Klainot said.

As a co-creator of the Village Green Street Fair and volunteer for Diva Night with the Wauwatosa Business Improvement District, Klainot had years of experience organizing large-scale events in the village. She also had experience with business events, planning day trips for a retirement community and co-producing a travel program for about 20 years for her husband’s company.

“I really just enjoy helping people create memories,” Klainot said. “I thought the only deficit I had was I really wanted some education behind me.”

So, she spent two years at Milwaukee Area Technical College, formally studying event management while working her full-time job, plus a part-time gig. Last year, she started Jaunt Events and Excursions, a name she hoped would embody the spirit of her business.

“Jaunt means journey and expedition and frolic. Our life is an adventure. Everything we do in our lives is a journey. And events tie that all together,” Klainot said.

So far, she has done everything from planning weddings to organizing a health fair for a local chiropractor. In the future, Klainot hopes to delve into culinary events and cultural tourism, perhaps working with the Wolf River Council on Tourism to share the culture of a Native American tribe in Crandon, or creating tours of German neighborhoods in Chicago, where people could shop the markets for ethnic food and hear the native language.

“It’s not just a drive-by; it’s experiencing that culture,” Klainot explained. “… It’s memorable and so much more rewarding than a thing you leave behind.”

Carry on Luggage 101 for Airline Passengers

Individuals are bringing on even more carry on luggage than ever in order to avoid those pesky  baggage fees that have become the norm in the airline industry. Space is limited in the cabin of a jet, so everyone needs to learn how to work within  the new regulations.  Check with your individual airline if you have more specific questions.

Each individual is allowed one carry on that will fit in the overhead bin.  Generally speaking, a carry on suitcase can measure up to 9x13x22 inches. Because of this, your carry on is best if it is a bit “squishy” rather than hard sided. This allows you increased ability to ensure your carry on will fit in the overhead. If you are flying a smaller, regional carrier their overhead compartments are smaller and most luggage will not fit.

A second carry on is permitted, but it MUST fit under the seat in front of you. Overhead luggage bin space is at a  premium now and this rule needs to be followed. The passenger next to you paid for checked luggage and when you insist that you will fit 2 suitcases in the overhead, you force other paying customers to have to scramble for space under seats for their items. It is important to follow this not just because it is an airline rule, but it is also a part of air travel etiquette.

What about extras? A purse, umbrella, coat, or camera case are ok. A backpack, laptop case, large purse, or a briefcase is generally counted as your second carry on. Flights are generally full now so the luxury of extra spaces has disappeared. The restrictions are being enforced  and you want to be prepared for the changes in today’s travel and avoid any undue tension or confusion.

All airline passengers need to follow the regulations in order for you, your fellow passengers and  all airline personnel be able to be a part of a safe and cordial environment.  Do you really want to be viewed as “difficult”, “uncoopertaive” or “unreasonable”?  Now is the time to learn how to make your travel experience more enjoyable.

As a result of the baggage fees, now is the perfect time to learn to pack smarter and lighter! Too often travelers come home with half a suitcase of unworn items. In a later post, more about how to pack wisely…..

311 for Carry-ons

Here are a few reminders from the Transportation Security Administration~

For safety reasons, carry on liquids are scrutinized and are governed by TSA rules:

  • Each traveler can have  only one quart sized, clear, zip top plastic bag. Larger bags are not permitted.
  • All liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in a 3.4 oz or smaller container (ie: think travel size). Larger containers that are half full or toothpase tubes rolled up are not allowed.
  • What is a gel or liquid? If you can pour it, pump it, squeeze it, spread it, smear it, spray it, or is spillable….then it is classified as a liquid or gel.
  • If you need larger amounts of any liquids, place the larger portions in your checked baggage.
  • Each traveler must remove their quart sized clear bag from their carry on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for x-ray screening.
  • There are exceptions for medical and child related reasons. Go to www.tsa.gov/311/311 to find out about the exceptions.
  • Following these rules helps to ensure safety and increased speed through TSA security.

How to Purchase a Suitcase

Purchasing a suitcase is no longer a purchase that does not require any thought process. In addition to many improved features in luggage, the airlines now have multiple restrictions. Gone are the days of unlimited luggage with airlines and the ease to overpack.

Consider what your travel needs are before you purchase a new suitcase.  If you tend  to drive to your vacation destinations there are very few concerns other than will it fit in the trunk. With this type of traveler your can afford to expect your luggage to last for a long period of time and if you want to invest in expensive luggage, go ahead.

Many traveler’s will fly to some or all of their vacation destinations. Keeping this in mind, consider the following when making a purchase of a new suitcase:

Size: Oversized suitcases rarely are a good purchase due to weight restrictions, particularily if you tend to pack heavy. The general rule of thumb is 62 inch totalmeasure your suitcase by length, height, and depth. Add those 3 measurements together to see if the suitcase will exceed the typical size limits. Know the weight restriction on your airline-it can vary from 35-50 pounds. Even one pound over and you can double, or more, the cost of your checked suitcase.

Color: Avoid black or blue. In a sea of suitcases on a carousel it is difficult to locate. Red used to stand out but now that color is becoming more commonplace. Your best bet is to buy a pattern-zebra print, neon circles, wild designs…..the bolder, the better! My daughters thought my leopard print suitcase was hideous, but when they found out they could spot it right away on the carousel without any confusion they were convinced their mom was right (again!).

Features to look for in suitcasesPrice-don’t spend alot of money on this purchase. Quality is good, but don’t by the high end luggage. My favorite place to buy luggage is Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. Their prices are 30-50% less than department store prices everyday! Spend the extra money for the 4 “spinner” wheels, they are amazing! Your suitcase won’t be tipsy, fall sideways, or need much effort to move it around. Outside zippers are common, but an easy spot for someone to remove something. Look for zippers & pockets on the inside of the suitcase. Some include features such as a pouch for dirty laundry, shoe pockets, jewelry pouches, and more. Select which features have the most value for you.

Have a suitcase already and not ready to upgrade? That’s ok, luggage takes a beating on both airlines and cruises and you’ll use this information later! In the meantime, make your suitcase unique. Everyone uses yarn to identify their luggage so you need to try something else. Loud, wild colored luggage tags are an option~and more than just one! Neoprene covers for the suitcase handles can help, just make sure the color is bright and unique. Some people use luggage straps not just to help hold their suitcase closed in transit but use it to help identify their luggage. Bumper stickers and colored “duct” tape are also choices. Not only do you want to spot your luggage easily in a sea of suitcases, but if it gets lost it will be easeir to identify, “It’s the suitcase with the yellow background and cherries on it”.

After saying all of this, keep in mind your luggage WILL take a lot of abuse. Dirt and torn surfaces will happen on the first flight. Accept that this is the norm and is not worth getting upset about.

Happy trails to you!

How to Plan a Budget Friendly Vacation This Year

Now is the time to plan a vacation!

2012 is the year to take that long  awaited winter or spring vacation. There are many ways to save on your travel plans and perhaps this is the vacation you will do something special. Third party booking agencies take advantage of any unused rooms at larger hotels and resorts at heavily discounted rates to the individual traveler. You CAN afford a vacation this year!

irst, stick with a reputable company. I have had great success with Cheapcaribean.com, Bookit.com, and Travelzoo. Keep in mind these are generally prepaid vacations, but some such as Bookit.com will break it into 3 payments. Many of the websites run specials, so get on their email list. I saved 65% on an all-inclusive trip to Puerto Vallarta Mexico during a 99 hour sale at Bookit.com. Some websites will add things such as room upgrades, spa credits, free tours, etc. but keep in mind these are 3rd party promises and not promised by the resort. I personally never had problems, but have read about it on review sites. Also, ask friends, relatives or coworkers for websites they have used.

Second, use flexible dates and destinations. Packages with air and hotel will save you the most money. By changing your departure or arrival date by just a few days can save you hundreds of dollars. If you don’t have a specific city in mind you can find deeper bargains. When I use these websites I look with an open mind and calendar. Be prepared, packages and rates change rapidly so what you see one day may be gone a few days later. Trying to plan a trip over spring break? This is NOT a time to find any bargains and will most likely be full of families & students.

If you are a wary of a destination or property look for reviews. I tend to use Tripadvisor for this. Keep in mind that there are always people who will complain so no property will ever be reviewed without any criticism. Look for patterns in the reviews for things such as service, maintenance, and amenities. Also look for the qualities that YOU value in a vacation. If you don’t like to swim in the ocean you won’t mind a rocky beach. I am a huge foodie, so I look for the quality of food in restaurants. If a resort is “secluded” and you love a city atmosphere you won’t be happy. Many people are quite specific in their reviews (such as how much is a taxi to town?) and this can provide you with valuable information in making your vacation destination decision.

Read the fine print. Make sure you understand what you are purchasing. Don’t make any assumptions. If it doesn’t say airport transfer is not included, then it is not included and you will have to pay for this on your own. Be sure to read about the cancellation policies before you book.

You can make requests when you book your vacation, but keep in mind, like all hotel bookings they are requests and not guarantees. You may request an early check in but when you arrive it may not be available because of people before you who didn’t check out on time. These requests  are always based on availability at all hotels and it is great when you get them, but rein in your temper at check in if your requests are not available.

And when you FINALLY arrive at your vacation destination….. Relax, turn off the electronics, and enjoy the company you are with. Memories will be made to last a lifetime!

Give the Gift of Memories this Holiday Season

Finding the “just right” gift can seem impossible for some people on our gift list. This year, give the gift of memories that will last long beyond the gift that comes wrapped in paper. Share a dinner out, a game night, winter outdoor activities, time around the fire, a concert, a night at a hotel, a snowball fight, plan a mini vacation with someone you care about, or attend a play.

Take the memories you’ve already created and put together a scrapbook,  create a video montage, write a poem, frame a special photo, share funny stories about each other or simply spend quiet time together.

Let those you care about know with the gift of your time and attention. Really listen to their thoughts, feelings, and wishes. Reach out with a phone call or visit, even when you think you just don’t have time.  Take the time to handwrite a letter expressing your gratitude. Remember, The best present you can give is the gift of yourself. Life is fleeting. The gifts we will always treasure are the memories we share with those we love.

GIVE GENEROUSLY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.
