Purchasing a suitcase is no longer a purchase that does not require any thought process. In addition to many improved features in luggage, the airlines now have multiple restrictions. Gone are the days of unlimited luggage with airlines and the ease to overpack.
Consider what your travel needs are before you purchase a new suitcase. If you tend to drive to your vacation destinations there are very few concerns other than will it fit in the trunk. With this type of traveler your can afford to expect your luggage to last for a long period of time and if you want to invest in expensive luggage, go ahead.
Many traveler’s will fly to some or all of their vacation destinations. Keeping this in mind, consider the following when making a purchase of a new suitcase:
Size: Oversized suitcases rarely are a good purchase due to weight restrictions, particularily if you tend to pack heavy. The general rule of thumb is 62 inch total–measure your suitcase by length, height, and depth. Add those 3 measurements together to see if the suitcase will exceed the typical size limits. Know the weight restriction on your airline-it can vary from 35-50 pounds. Even one pound over and you can double, or more, the cost of your checked suitcase.
Color: Avoid black or blue. In a sea of suitcases on a carousel it is difficult to locate. Red used to stand out but now that color is becoming more commonplace. Your best bet is to buy a pattern-zebra print, neon circles, wild designs…..the bolder, the better! My daughters thought my leopard print suitcase was hideous, but when they found out they could spot it right away on the carousel without any confusion they were convinced their mom was right (again!).
Features to look for in suitcases: Price-don’t spend alot of money on this purchase. Quality is good, but don’t by the high end luggage. My favorite place to buy luggage is Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. Their prices are 30-50% less than department store prices everyday! Spend the extra money for the 4 “spinner” wheels, they are amazing! Your suitcase won’t be tipsy, fall sideways, or need much effort to move it around. Outside zippers are common, but an easy spot for someone to remove something. Look for zippers & pockets on the inside of the suitcase. Some include features such as a pouch for dirty laundry, shoe pockets, jewelry pouches, and more. Select which features have the most value for you.
Have a suitcase already and not ready to upgrade? That’s ok, luggage takes a beating on both airlines and cruises and you’ll use this information later! In the meantime, make your suitcase unique. Everyone uses yarn to identify their luggage so you need to try something else. Loud, wild colored luggage tags are an option~and more than just one! Neoprene covers for the suitcase handles can help, just make sure the color is bright and unique. Some people use luggage straps not just to help hold their suitcase closed in transit but use it to help identify their luggage. Bumper stickers and colored “duct” tape are also choices. Not only do you want to spot your luggage easily in a sea of suitcases, but if it gets lost it will be easeir to identify, “It’s the suitcase with the yellow background and cherries on it”.
After saying all of this, keep in mind your luggage WILL take a lot of abuse. Dirt and torn surfaces will happen on the first flight. Accept that this is the norm and is not worth getting upset about.
Happy trails to you!
